Caring for an Embellished Abaya

An embellished abaya is made to be worn, often and with pleasure. A few simple habits keep every crystal, bead and stitch looking as it did on the first evening.

After wearing

• Let the piece air before putting it away, especially after a long evening.
• Check the embellished areas gently. If a bead or crystal feels loose, set the piece aside and contact us rather than wearing it again.
• Remove jewellery, brooches and bag straps with care; they are the most common cause of snagged threads.

Cleaning

• Professional dry cleaning is the safest choice for heavily embellished pieces. Mention the embellishment so it can be protected.
• Never machine wash or tumble dry an embellished abaya.
• For a small mark, dab gently with a clean, damp cloth; do not rub over beadwork or crystals.
• Always follow the care label on your piece first.

Pressing

• Use a steamer held a short distance from the fabric, or press on low heat from the reverse with a cloth between iron and fabric.
• Never place an iron directly on crystals, beads or embroidery.

Storing

• Hang on a padded or wide hanger so the shoulders keep their shape; fold very heavy pieces instead, with tissue between layers.
• Store in a breathable garment bag, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
• Give each piece room in the wardrobe so embellishment does not press against other garments.

Travelling

Fold with tissue paper over the embellished areas, place the piece near the top of your case, and hang it as soon as you arrive. A light steam will release any creases.
